The International Automotive Task Force (IATF) has published IATF 16949:2016, replacing ISO/TS 16949:2009 as the quality management standard for the automotive industry.IATF 16949:2016 is a Global Quality Management Standard for the automotive sector, outlining the requirements for an effective Quality Management System (QMS). Adherence to this business-critical standard is mandatory for many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and suppliers to the automotive industry. Although it is no longer an international (ISO) standard, IATF 16949:2016 is to be implemented as a supplement to, and in conjunction with ISO 9001:2015 rather than being a standalone QMS.
ISO/TS 16949, in conjunction with ISO 9001:2015, defines the quality management system requirements for the design and development, production and, when relevant, installation and service of automotive-related products.
ISO/TS 16949 is applicable to sites of the organization where customer-specified parts, for production and/or service, are manufactured.
Supporting functions, whether on-site or remote (such as design centres, corporate headquarters and distribution centres), form part of the site audit as they support the site, but cannot obtain stand-alone certification to ISO/TS 16949.
ISO/TS 16949 can be applied throughout the automotive supply chain.
