ISI mark is a certification mark for industrial products in India. The mark certifies that a product confirms to the Indian Standard, mentioned as IS:xxxx on top of themark, developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India.
The BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) is a quality mark and also has established its brand image for more than six decades as the consumer is always inclined towards quality products. Therefore, the consumer as well as the organized purchaser prefers ISI Marked products. With the growing popularity of ISI mark, instances of misuse of ISI Mark are also on the rise as the unscrupulous manufacturers are trying to cheat the consumers by use of Standard Mark (ISI Mark) without obtaining the licence from BIS.
The erstwhile Indian Standards Institution (ISI) was established in year 1947 (now Bureau of Indian Standards) with the objective of harmonious development of standardization activity in India. Under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986, Bureau establishes Indian Standards in relation to any article or process and amends, revises or cancels the standards so established as may be necessary, by a process of consultation involving consumers, manufacturers, Government and regulatory bodies, technologists, scientists and testing laboratories through duly constituted committees.
